Papers of Daphne Judd, 1941-1942

Case book kept by Daphne Judd as a pupil midwife at Lewisham Hospital, London, covering in good details antenatal checks and deliveries attended by her, including mother's names and addresses, father's occupation, previous medical history, antenatal checks, conditions during labour, and condition of baby. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of the certificate issued to Daphne Judd by the Central Midwives Board at the conclusion of her midwifery training, together with photographs of her in midwife's uniform and in service uniform of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service

Daphne Judd was born and brought up in Buckingham and then left in her early twenties to train as a nurse in London. She did some of her midwifery training in Hackney on the district, and was registered as a midwife by the CMB in March 1942, following training with Lewisham Hospital. In 1942 she joined the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service, and spent the rest of the War in the Middle East. She was on the first hospital ship into Singapore after the Japanese surrender and it was there that she met her husband. She had three children, spent 14 years in South Africa and died in 2008, age 94 in England.
