Scope and Content

Letter from RD to his mother, relating to: the temporary closure of the theatre in Buxton [following Britain's declaration of war on Germany, on 3 September]; his father's death [on 29 August], which he believes came at the best time, after being settled in a new home and before Hitler's foul blow had hit his beloved Poland; RD's performance as Romeo, which has been popular with audiences, but not with the critics; positive notices of [Shaw's] Devil's disciple [in which RD played Dick Dudgeon]; and his plans to grow food and keep animals at Brambleberry during the war.

Dated at: Buxton [Derbyshire]. Holograph.
