Scope and Content

Letter from RD to his parents, relating to: his arrival in Birmingham [to perform at the Theatre Royal]; his costume; the steady growth in respect and favour he is shown in the [Frank Benson] Company; his roles so far, which have included successful comedy parts, as well as some serious character studies and straight or juvenile roles; his feeling that he has been treated unfairly in not being offered more juvenile roles; his belief, nevertheless, in the importance of character parts for developing serious acting ability; the jealousies and rivalries among the young male actors in the company; and £2 he is sending his parents from his salary.

Dated at: Birmingham; holograph.
