Scope and Content

At the time of his death in 1946 Paul Nash was proofing colour blocks and collotypes used to illustrate his essay 'Aerial Flowers'. The correspondence outlines how Conrad Senat, Counterpoint Publications, continued to proof reproductions and handled accounts after Nash's death, until Margaret requested liability for the work, leaving Senat control of the balance. References are made in the correspondence to 'the big book' (TGA 7050/2103) and in later writings the 'main Picture Book' in the hands of publishers Lund Humphries (TGA 7050/2109) although it is difficult to tell if this was 'Aerial Flowers' or another publication (after Nash's death Margaret produced a 'brochure' published by the Chiswick Press entitled 'Aerial Flowers' with the possible intention of creating a larger volume, see TGA 7050/2109-52). All letters from Chiswick Press are from F.J. Newbury, except one from C.R. Roberts, General Manager, to Albert Rutherston regarding Rutherston's proofing of 'Vernal Equinox' and 'Eclipse of the Sunflower ' reproductions, letter inscribed by Rutherston (TGA 7050/2095). Includes three letters from H.J. Harrison, Darby and Son, Solicitors, re the transference of production in publishing Nash's book over from Conrad Senat to Margaret Nash, and Margaret's purchase of the printing blocks and paper held at Chiswick Press (TGA 7050/2098, 2105-06). Reference is also made to the Nonesuch edition of the 'Book of Genesis' being in the Chiswick Press's possession (TGA 7050/2097), and the breakdown of the cost of printing blocks and paper purchased by Margaret (TGA 7050/2103). Paintings and reproduction blocks for paintings discussed are: 'Canterbury Bells', 'Cyclamen', 'Eclipse of the Sunflower', 'Kinetic Feature' 'Landscape of the Megaliths', 'Landscape of Vernal Equinox', 'The Shore', 'Sun Descending' and 'Sunset Eye'.
