Scope and Content

Correspondents include Air Ministry officials I.B. Hutchinson, J.L. Cooke, H.O. Blow, J. Floss, W.G. Nott-Bower, H. Peake, Harold Balfour, C.G. Caines, F.J. Tywell, J. Cherney and A. Blackborow. Ministry of Information correspondents include E.M. O'Rourke Dickey, M. Bell, H.M. Wain, O. Day, C.H. Gibbs-Smith and Kenneth Clark working for the Artists Advisory Committee. Other correspondents include F.L. Wills, J. Herring and W.A. Bowen of various RAF photographic departments, and John Piper.

The correspondence is mainly from Hutchinson, Nott-Bower, Balfour, Dickey and Kenneth Clark, covering in detail Paul Nash's appointment, work and decommission as an official war artist. The letters contain references to Nash's terms and conditions of work; permits, finances and expenses; reference photographs requested or taken by Nash; exhibitions at the National Gallery; provisional titles and particular pieces of work including paintings of crashed German bombers, Wellington, Whitley and Blenheim aircraft and 'aerial creatures'. They include details of Paul Nash's decommission from the Air Ministry, and a draft letter of concern from Paul Nash and letters regarding his transfer to the Ministry of Information as an unofficial war artist (TGA 7050/55). The collection also includes Paul Nash's typed list of aeroplanes and locations.
