Scope and Content

To his mother, "I am living int he greatest luxury as the guest of the most famous Old Wykehamist General of this war" [i.e. Wavell]. Says he will shortly be going stay with General Auchinleck's wife, had has been lucky in the accommodation offered. Update 5 Aug, now staying with Lady Auchinleck and Mrs Russell [Elizabeth Russell, née Birket, wife of General Dudley Russell, 1896-1978]. He describes Auchinleck’s dog Bockie. Remarks on much lower cost of goods in India. Update 10 August describes his daily work routine and some former Bradfield acquaintances he is working with. Says "remarkable the number of people who are connected with Winchester out here". Heard about Auchinleck's visit to England, and thought he was in Syria.
