This was the Rev. Nicholas Owen, author of British Remains and other works. They do not give a very good impression of that learned cleric, but represent him as a somewhat persistent, unfortunate seeker after preferment, and lacking in the worldly prudence necessary in such quests. If he were disappointed, as he very often was, in his appeals for the livings of Llandyfrydog, Caernarvon, and Llangynhafal, he waxed wroth, and wrote letters containing material little short of direct insults to people such as Dr. Warren, Bishop of Bangor, to the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. John Moore), and Lord Bulkeley [Thomas James, 7th Viscount and first Lord Bulkeley of Beaumaris]. In the event he received from the latter the scathing epistle of April 16, 1794. At last, in 1800, he received the living of Meyllteyrn with Bottwnog and died there eleven years later.
