Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir John Mathewson Watson, alderman, relating to a letter of congratulation on a speech given by Scott on the retirement of [Charles Edward] Montague, journalist and novelist, with praise of the Manchester Guardian, which is acknowledged with thanks. Also included is reference to the decision not to publish a letter [to the editor, by Watson] suggesting the transfer of Ernest Emil Darwin Simon, industrialist, politician, and public servant, to a different Manchester constituency, without first receiving permission from Simon.

There is also correspondence with Hewlett Johnson, dean of Canterbury, relating to a request that Scott write a letter of support for the bestowal of a knighthood on Mathewson Watson, which is granted.

Also included is correspondence between Mathewson Watson and E.T. Scott, relating to the proposal that E.T. Scott might be appointed as a magistrate, which is declined.
