Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir Ernest Nathaniel Bennett (1865-1947), politician and journalist, relating to Bennett's work as a war correspondent for the Manchester Guardian on the Turkish army in Libya. Also included is discussion of the form of information to be sent, Bennett's movements and an arrangement to share letters sent by Bennett with the Daily Chronicle.

There is correspondence relating to a request for the provision of articles from Bennett on the preparation, leadership, strategy and supply chain of the Turkish army, from his position as a press censor for the Turkish army. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing Bennett's acknowledged bias in favour of the Turks.

There is discussion of the conditions of agricultural labourers, with reference to housing and the minimum wage. There is also correspondence relating to discussion of the potential publication of letters by Bennett on negotiations for peace with Germany [during the First World War], on the political situation in Egypt, and on [The Well of Loneliness] by Radclyffe Hall, in the Manchester Guardian.
