Scope and Content

Correspondence with James Bone, journalist, relating to the employment of Bone in the London office, and later as [London editor], of the Manchester Guardian. There is correspondence relating to arrangements for employment and salary, with discussion of Bone's previous work experience, and accompanying internal memoranda.

Also included is discussion of a renewal of Bone's contract, praise of his work, and notes on the form and subjects of articles from the London office. There is correspondence relating to Bone's occasional contribution of articles to the The Spectator, and to [R.H.] Gretton leaving his post as London editor of the Manchester Guardian.

There is also correspondence relating to discussion of Bone's appointment as [London editor], with discussion of the work to be undertaken, staffing and salary, and a definition of Bone's responsibilities with relation to the production of the London [correspondence column] of the Manchester Guardian.

There is a tribute to Bone from the Manchester office composing room and technical departments, written in the style of proofs for the London correspondence column, on the occasion of his retirement.
