Correspondence with Sir George W. Prothero

Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir George Walter Prothero (1848-1922), historian, relating to Prothero's employment as a correspondent on the University of Cambridge for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the role, and of payment for the work. There is a suggestion by Prothero that he give up the role, due to other commitments, but he is persuaded to continue to send articles on important matters, and to delegate the compilation of the more general information. Also included is a letter of recommendation for Prothero from Mandell Creighton, Bishop of London and historian.

There is a letter of recommendation from Prothero for Garnett Smith, with details of his previous experience as a reviewer, and a request that he be considered for work for the Manchester Guardian, which is acknowledged.
