Scope and Content

This series relates to the exhibition Samuel Pepys Esquire at the National Portrait Gallery which was jointly organised by Julia and Roy Strong, director of the National Gallery, who would later become her husband. This exhibition was the first time that a theatre designer had worked on an exhibition for a major museum and the exhibition was highly regarded. The series contains correspondence, publicity material, notes on exhibition items, their provenance and sourcing, reference materials and research material and illustrations, plans and designs for the rooms and layout of the exhibition and fabric swatches.
