Five folders of contracts.
1. File of original contracts between Associated London Scripts, for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1959-1966. Contracts include:
- a live performance of ‘Mother Goose’ for the BBC at the Wimbledon Theatre in 1959 (£722 15s);
an eight-week stand-up booking in Johannesburg in 1960 (£450 pw);
- Hammer Films: Church Organist in ‘Watch It Sailor’ (1961) (£100 a day);
- ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ (1961) (£250);
- Independent Artists: Man in Manhole in ‘The Fast Lady’ (1962) (£125);
- Cook and Luard Productions: Stand-up at The Establishment Club in 1962 (£125 pw);
- Woodfall Films: Mr. Fitzpatrick in ‘Tom Jones’ (1963) (£800 guaranteed). Frankie Howerd withdrew from the role due to a clash of dates. Includes correspondence between Woodfall films and Beryl Vertue;
- Decca: LP, ‘Frankie Howerd at The Establishment’ (1962). 2 copies. (£100 plus 5 1/2% royalties);
- BBC: ‘That Was The Week That Was’, April 1963 (125 guineas episode fee);
- Pseudolus in ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum’ (stage musical, London,1963) (18-month contract at £450 pw, rising to £550 pw plus a percentage after 15 weeks);
- ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ (1964) (£937 10s — see above);
- Walter Shenson Films: Sam Ahab in Beatles Two (Help! (1965)) (£600 guaranteed). Howerd’s scene, shot with Wendy Richard, was cut from the finished film; and
- Braywild Ltd: Alphonse/Albert in The Treasure of St. Trinian’s (The Great St. Trinian’s Train Robbery (1966)) (£8000).
2. File of original contracts between Associated London Scripts, for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1966-1968. Mostly contracts covering advertising and interview fees, as well as one-night performances at seaside venues, the contracts also include:
- Bernard Delfont: ‘The Frankie Howerd Show’ (Prince of Wales Theatre, London 1966 (£600 pw plus 10% of the box office). Directed by Eric Sykes, written by Sykes, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson; and
- Canterville Company: Local Constable in ‘The Canterville Ghost’ (1966), a US TV production starring Michael Redgrave and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
3. File of original contracts between Associated London Scripts, for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1968-1969. The contracts, many for advertising engagements and one night performances and residencies at variety clubs, also include:
- ABC TV: Frankie Howerd Meets The Bee Gees (1968) (£625);
- Contract with Peter Cook’s ‘The Establishment’;
- Contract for ‘That Was The Week That Was’;
- Howerd at The Palladium
- Performing Arts Ltd.: ‘The Wind in the Sassafras Trees’ (1968), written by Ray Galton and Simpson;
- ITC: ‘Sunday Night at The London Palladium’ (1969) (£2500).
4. File of original contracts between Associated London Scripts, for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1969-1972, with typed full list of contents to inside front cover. The contracts, many for advertising engagements and one night performances and residencies at variety clubs, also include:
- BBC: ‘Up Pompeii’ (1969) (£1875 per episode), as well as the contract for the second series for the following year;
- Thames TV: ‘Carry On Christmas’ (1969) (£375)
- Adder Productions: ‘Carry On Up The Jungle’ (1970) (£1500 pw);
- Daily Mirror Newspapers: Interviews with FH for a four-part series of 2500-word pieces to appear in the Sunday Mirror (£2500). Two copies, one signed by Howerd, the other by Sunday Mirror editor Michael Christiansen;
- Associated London Films: Lurcio in ‘Up Pompeii’ (1971) (£10,000);
- ATV: The Golden Shot (1971) (£250 guest appearance);
- BBC: Top of the Pops (1971) (£150 guest appearance);
- Associated London Films: Lurkalot in ‘Up The Chastity Belt’ (1972) (£10,000);
- Associated London Films: Lurk in ‘UpThe Front’ (1972) (£10,000) - photocopy of original signed agreement.
5. File of original contracts between Associated London Scripts, for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1972-1976. The contracts, many for advertising engagements, chat show appearances, extract fees and one night stands and residencies at variety clubs, also include:
- BBC: ‘Up Baghdad’ (‘Whoops Baghdad’ (1972)) (£2000 per episode);
- Moonworth: ‘Nightmare Park’ (‘The House in Nightmare Park’ (1973) (£12,000);
- Leslie Grade Ltd.: Simple Simon in the London Palladium pantomime (1972-3) (£3,000 pw);
- CBC: ‘Ohhh Canada’ (‘The Frankie Howerd Show’ (1976)) ($4,000 per episode);
- Cyril Kersh: Frankie Howerd autobiography (1975) (£10,000 advance);
- ‘Up Casanova’: 19pp. typescript by Hugh Stuckey, a revised treatment, character outlines and storylines. Produced by Thames TV in 1975 with the title ‘A Touch of the Casanovas’, reaction to the pilot show was tepid and the series was never made;
- David Paradine Productions: ‘Up The Convicts’ (1976) ($5,000 per episode);
- Thames TV: This Is Your Life (1976) (£750).
