Scope and Content

Two folders of contracts, and one folder of correspondence.
1. File of original contracts between Robert Stigwood Organisation (formerly Associated London Scripts), for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1976-1979, with three page typed list of contents. The contracts, many for advertising engagements, chat show appearances, extract fees and one night stands and residencies at variety clubs, also include:
- Mike Mansfield Enterprises: correspondence relating to possible production of ‘The Gong Show’, 1977-8, including an Inducement Letter and two copies of an Agreement. (A pilot of the show was made (but not picked up), but not until 1985 when it was produced by Gambit Enterprises (see next folder);
- Thames TV: ‘Just So Stories’ (1979) (£250 per episode);
- Robert Stigwood / N.F. Geria: Mr. Mustard in ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ (1978) ($40,000);
- Thames TV: Photographer in ‘The Plank’ (1979) (£350).
2. File of original contracts between Robert Stigwood Organisation for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1976-1979, with typed list of contents on inside front cover. The contracts, many for advertising engagements, chat and quiz show appearances, extract fees and one night stands and residencies at variety clubs, also include:
- YTV: ‘Frankie Howerd Reveals All’ (1980) (£3250);
- Victorama /J.M.Dent: Short correspondence and contract for the book ‘Trumps! And How to Come Up’ (1982), here with the working title Bizaster! With a letter from Gyles Brandreth, 22 April 1981, for Victorama;
- BBC: ‘Then Churchill Said To Me’ (1982) (£2250). Pilot show. The series was made in 1982, but sensitivities around the Falklands War at the time of production meant the show was not screened until 1993.
3. File of correspondence between Robert Stigwood Organisation for Frankie Howerd and a wide variety of employers, 1976-1979. The material includes:
- ‘Up Pompeii’. Correspondence with BBC Enterprises relating to US sales of the series, and royalties arising;
- Narration script for an episode of ‘The Blunders’ (1986, but script dated 1983), with a collection of correspondence regarding the show, 1983-84;
- BBC: ‘All The World’s A Stage’ (1984). Correspondence relating to scheduling and availability difficulties, with a copy of the script by Ronald Harwood, and a filming schedule for episode three;
- Mimeographed copy of episode two of ‘Then Churchill Said To Me’ (1981, first broadcast 1993);
- Unsigned letter from Frankie Howerd to Mitchell Simons of the BBC, declining a TV interview request;
- TVS: No. 73 (1984). Script pages for Howard’s appearance as himself.
