Scope and Content

Four folders of professional correspondence and one folder of newspaper cuttings.
1. Folder of fan mail, 1991-1992, some with copies of Frankie Howerd’s replies dictated in his absence.
2. Folder of press cuttings, 1990-1992, including tributes following his death.
3. Folder of correspondence between Tessa Le Bars and interested parties, 1990-1992, relating to professional activities over the last two years of Howerd’s life. Includes possible video releases of past shows, offers of, and scripts for, commercials, and some press cuttings.
4. Correspondence between Tessa Le Bars, solicitors Gregory, Rowcliffe Milners, Betty Paye (Frankie Howerd’s sister) and Dennis Heymer (Frankie Howerd’s partner), 1992 onwards, relating to the administration of the estate following his death. Includes:
- Letter from Graham Stark to Tessa Le Bars, 12 December 1992, discussing the mounting of a plaque in FH’s memory at his Edwardes Square home;
- Discussions between Tessa Le Bars, Betty Paye and Dennis Heymer relating to the arrangements for FH’s memorial service.
5. Large folder of correspondence, between Tessa Le Bars, Betty Paye and interested parties, 1993-2006, relating to the running of the affairs of the Frankie Howerd estate after his death. Includes:
- A quantity of ongoing correspondence between Gregory, Rowcliff and Milners, solicitors for the estate and Tessa Le Bars, dealing with the estate’s tax and business affairs (including the liquidation of Frankie Howard Scripts Ltd.);
- Copy of a letter from Tessa Le Bars to Betty Paye, 26 October 1994 regarding a proposed sale of scripts, photographs and letters, and a reply from Paye asking for an award to be returned and that Tessa Le Bars directs future correspondence through the solicitors (Gregory, Rowcliffe, Milners);
- Two letters (one dictated) from Dennis Heymer to Tessa Le Bars, 2006-2007, discussing recent TV documentary projects involving Frankie Howerd, Heymer’s reluctance to appear on camera in those projects, and fund raising initiatives instigated by Heymer;
- Correspondence between Dennis Heymer and Tessa Le Bars, 2008, occasioned by the BBC4 film ‘Rather You Than Me’ (2008).
