Scope and Content

Material for ‘Up Pompeii’ (BBC TV, 1970) including rehearsal scripts, revised cast list with contact details for all cast members and their agents, typescript for a TV special (signed and heavily annotated by Howerd), typescript scene breakdown, and sample script by Dudley Stevens ‘for the personal perusal of Mr Howerd.’ Also includes typed synopsis for the stage version of ‘Up Pompeii’ (15 December 1985) by Miles Tredinnick, marked as the second draft.
Also included in this box are:
- two mimeographed play scripts for ‘The Life and Times of Francis Howerd’ by Ken Hoare and Mike Sharland;
- draft TV screenplay of ‘Frankie Howerd in Society’ – with the working title ‘Frankie Howerd Special’ and call sheet (1980);
- photocopied television screenplay for episode four of ‘Then Churchill Said To Me’ (1992);
- working TV screenplay of ‘Carry on Christmas’ (episode 1 of 4, heavily annotated by Howerd);
- eight page photocopy of sample scenes of ‘Out of Wedlock by Peter Robinson and Hugh Stuckey’ (with covering letter to Tessa le Bars from Stuckey, 31 January 1977);
- rehearsal script for ‘The Blackpool Show’ by ABC Weekend television (transmitted 10 July 1966);
- typescript autobiographical material entitled ‘Tit Bits: Frankie Howerd’s own story - my steps to stardom’;
- undated typescript entitled ‘Danny in Tellyland’ by George Scott; and
- two further unidentified rehearsal scripts (both lacking title pages).
