The author is Dr. Alfred Mayer, a refugee from Germany who has found domicile and work at Caernarvon, a gentleman of considerable gifts, a sound scholar, and a person who makes a brave effort to appreciate the various strange phases of his new life. In this work he has been pretty successful in choosing the salient facts in the development of Welsh life, but not always as happy in alighting upon illustrative events in General History; very naturally, his hold on Welsh terminology is as yet uncertain (witness entries under 1787 and 1788).
