Scope and Content

Joseph Russell. Theomagia. 18th century (c. 1775-1776). A notebook, entitled Theomagia on the outer front cover and Practical questions on fol. 1r (of which the bottom half has been cut out), containing horoscopes, talismans, medical recipes, prayers and invocations and other material: some entries are in different hands. The horoscopes are chiefly on fols 2-16; the talismans on fols 17, 18, 50-54; the recipes on fols 19, 39-50; the prayers and invocations for summoning spirits on fols 27-37. On fols 22v and 23v are verses, those on 23v being signed I.R. On fol. 23r is a copy letter from Joseph Russell [in London] to a gentleman, urging him to leave London for 'the middle part of this kingdom' to pursue his studies into nature there: the letter is signed Jos[eph] Russill. On fol. 56v is the inscription Joseph Ru[ssill]. The date 1775 occurs on fol. 25r, Sept 16 1776 on fol. 24v, and 1776 on the outer front cover. Bookplate of William Gordon of Fyvie, Aberdeenshire
