Scope and Content

2 different subjects, both with slides. Fields and Hedges (42 slides in 1 small green slide box). Looks at the history of fields, early farming methods, open strip farming, Anglo Saxon and Medieval methods, field naming systems (eg Grasscroft, Two Day Field etc), Enclosure Act etc. Carvings (56 slides in 2 small green slide boxes). There appears to be 2 separate talks on Carvings - (1) on the historic background and general history of stone and (2) Looking at more modern examples of carving - in situ in Kirkburton, Lower Whitley, Edgerton, Greenhead Road, Lindley Clock Tower, Somerset Buildings, Waverley Hotel, Huddersfield Town Hall, Drill Hall etc. Subjects include heads, flowers, foliage, heraldic beasts, mythology, birds, lions, ram's heads, heraldry, fishes etc. Edgar Wood, Stirling Lee and Richard Garner are mentioned.
