7 short talks, no slides. The talks are entitled - (1) A Walk Around Huddersfield 1880s-1890s. (2) Coining. Clipping metal off coins, looking at people arrested for the offence. (3) Unlawful Settlement - which looks at bastardy, poaching, begging, punishments such as transportation, pillory, ducking stools, whipping and branding. (4) Lesser Crimes - such as failing to maintain footpaths, highways, bridges etc, unwillingness to accept sentence for a previous wrongdoing, obstructing the highway, theft, unpaid taxes and assault. (5) Executions at York - History from 1379, from the original Tyburn at Micklegate Bar to the moving of it to 'behind city walls' in early 19th century. Lists some of the people executed from Huddersfield area, including those Luddites found guilty of the murder of Willliam Horsfall. Other crimes are mentioned in some detail. (6) Child Labour in Textiles - History of apprenticeships, child workers in mills, the Colnebridge Fire, Richard Oastler, ten hour bill, Lord Shaftsbury. (7) Child Labour in the Mines. Looking at local mines, Huskar Pit disaster, a man's description of working underground as a child and conditions in general.
