Scope and Content

Score. Melody only (unless otherwise stated) of psalms, hymns, and songs. Some are possibly intended for the guitar, others, despite having a text, are presumably intended for the flute (because of their range). No title-page.

Most of the music is anonymous in this source. Composers (or sources) named or identified include: Egide-Joseph-Ignace-Antoine Albanese (1729-1800), Thomas Augustine Arne (1710-1778), William Bates (fl. 1750-1780), The Beggar's Opera (1729), Robert Bremner's Instructions for the Guitar [1758], Robert Bremner's Twelve Scots Songs for a Voice or Guitar [1760], George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Santo Lapis (fl. 1725-1764), and Frederich Theodor Schumann (fl. 1760-1780). Considering the textual incipits, the source for most of the hymns would appear to be: "The Hymns Anthems and Tunes with the Ode used at the Magdalen Chapel ... Book I" (London: Henry Thorowgood, [c.1765]). See printed catalogue, p. 116, and GB-Lbl F.1120.kk for copies of this probable concordance.

Casing: board with Dutch Marble paper, no spine. Front endpaper is inscribed "1761 May ye 26 / Juliana Mackworth". 8-stave MS paper. The hymns are in a single, amateur, hand (except f. 35v), presumably that of Juliana Mackworth (see also 442/27). Foliation added when catalogued. For individual entries, if the only text given is in the title area (in bold, opposite the foliation), then no further text is given in this source.
