Scope and Content

Volume titled "MANUSCRIPT / COLLECTION / NO. 21".

Score. Italian solo cantatas (ff. 1-42) by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), the Baron Emanuele d'Astorga (1680-?1757), Francesco Mancini (1672-1737) and Francesco Nicola Fago (1677-1745). In the hand of D. Linike (identified by Winton Dean), one of Handel's principal copyists between 1717 and 1721. The volume continues with miscellaneous songs, minuets (dated from the 1750s) and keyboard pieces (in other, later hands).

For this repertory, composers named or identified include Thomas Arne (1710-1778), Baron Emanuele d'Astorga (1680-?1757), Francesco Barsanti (1690-1772), Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747), William Boyce (1711-1779), Henry Burgess the younger (fl 1737-1781), William Felton (1715-1769), George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783), James Hook (1746-1827), John Humphries (c. 1707-c 1740), Lévy (fl 1751), Meslé (fl 1751), Louis-François-Barthélemy Piffet (1734-1779), Frederic Theodor Schumann (fl 1760-1780), Jose Antonio Carlos Seyxas [Seixas] (1704-1742), John Christopher Smith (1712-1795), John Stanley (1712-1786), and John Worgan (1724-1790).

The title is taken from the spine; rebound in the 20th century. Foliation added in pencil as catalogued. The first part of the MS (ff. 1-43), is paginated in ink (pp. 1-85). Volume reverses from f. 48v. The bass is figured. The front endpaper has a pasted inscription, "H. Mackworth / 1766". The music is preceded by a "Tabula" (inscribed "H. Mackworth") for the cantatas. Sources for many of the minuets in this volume have been identified by Deiniol Morgan. Melanie Johnston's research identified the song from "The Tempest" (424/5/12).
