Privately published work on Edward Bickersteth and the WMMS mission in the Yoruba part of Nigeria in the mid C19th. Contains numerous illustration (mostly modern) as well as extracts from Bickersteth's journals and letters.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edward Bickersteth (?1812-?1862), a liberated slave originally a member of the Egba people of Western Nigeria but raised in Sierra Leone. Served as a 'native agent' (indigenous teacher and lay pastor) for the WMMS in and around Abeokuta, Nigeria, from 1849 until 1862.
