Scope and Content

Contains an account by Grace Dunham of her childhood in Canterbury, Kent, and Shrewsbury, Shropshire, between 1902 and 1911; an account by her of her work in education in the Ivory Coast between 1928 and 1932; her account of the life and work of her husband, Hendrik Gerard James. Includes reproductions of a few family photographs.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev Hendrick Gerard James (1902-1983) served the (Wesleyan) Methodist Missionary Society in their French West Africa District from 1927 to 1937 and in their Northern Rhodesia District from 1937 to 1948.

Grace Mary James (née Dunham) (1902-1984) served the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in their French West Africa District from 1928 to 1931 working in education and then working with her husband in the same district and later in the Methodist Missionary Society Northern Rhodesia District.
