Scope and Content

Privately produced work on the WMMS missionary the Rev John Smithies, his descendants and Methodism in Western Australia, particularly with regard to the Swan River area. Includes reproductions of photographs and newspaper cuttings (some of which are loose at the rear of the volume).

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev John Smithies (1800-1872) served the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society as a missionary in their Newfoundland District in Canada (1828-1837), The Bahamas District (1837-1838) and in Australia at Swan-river (1839-1853) and York (1853-1855). Smithies then, for the newly formed Australian Wesleyan Methodist Church, served in Tasmania from 1855 until 1872.
