Poem entitled Advice to Mr. White to paint Dr. Sancroft

Scope and Content

Manuscript item bound in a volume of printed pamphlets.

Incipit of the poem: 'Come White prepare to grave ye man once more'. Explicit of the poem: 'An equal share and scandall to his Crown / Who's been of every side, but true to None'.

Robert White had depicted Sancroft in his painting of the 'Seven bishops committed to the Tower in 1688'. In this poem in praise of Archbishop Sancroft (and vilifying his successor John Tillotson) it is suggested that Mr. White should paint Sancroft once more and should 'Let self deniall and sincerity / with universal love and charity ; / Let deep humility and perfect peace / With patience and every other grace / Ly sweetly intermingl'd in his face'. However, White is adjured to depict Tillotson as 'a fat jovial priest, not thin and lean / But pamper'd like the jolly God of Wine, / With ruddy cherry cheeks & double chin'. Tillotson's Socinianism is also lampooned and this unflattering portrait is to be painted so that 'true blue protestants be gull'd no more'.

Listed in the Bowdler Manuscript Catalogue: Bundle 122, Item 43, where it is indexed as: 'Advice to Mr. White to paint Dr. Sandcroft. MS. 1689'.
