The sub-fonds consists of material related to Calvin Wells' skeletal reports, both published and unpublished, which he produced between 1955-1984. Included in the material are various versions of Wells' skeletal reports (offprints, typescripts and handwritten copies), research material (primary data and statistics, photographs, site maps and plans, and secondary literature), and correspondence with the individuals or organisations which commissioned Wells (archaeologists, archaeology university departments, government agencies, museum curators). The documentation relates to Calvin Wells' analysis of skeletal material excavated at archaeological sites, mainly in the United Kingdom but with a few from Africa, Asia and continental Europe.

The sub-fonds is arranged geographically according to country, then county, and then by city, town, village or civil parish. Material related to Calvin Wells' skeletal reports on remains excavated in Norfolk and Suffolk is placed at the beginning of the England file to reflect the predominance of his work on archaeological skeletal remains excavated in those two counties.
