Transparencies

This sub-fonds consists of Calvin Wells' collection of 1,351 colour transparencies which he created or collected for use in research, publication and speaking engagements. The images primarily relate in some form to palaeopathology with pictures of skeletal remains demonstrating fractures, wounds, infections, dental diseases, or genetic or developmental abnormalities. Similarly there are images used for the purpose of demonstrating how to estimate the sex and age skeletal remains. Also included in the collection are a considerable amount of anthropological images, such as tools, artefacts and artworks from by tribes, societies and civilisations from around the world. This includes material from continental Europe, Africa, Pre-Columbian America and Asia. In some instances the slides have been reproduced from Wells' own or by photographers he commissioned. In other instances the slides originate from photography collections of other institutions, such as the British Museum, the Natural History Museum or the Wellcome Library. The final series contains a small number of personal images of candid pictures of Wells at work, water-skiing, on holiday, or with family and friends.
