Scope and Content

Mail Art. This image, collaged on a photocopy of inflight life jacket instructions, uses seven collage stamp faces of Marianne (standing for the Virgin Mary) with additional collage stamps of airplanes. It addresses the situation of African migrants who are deported from European countries. The disappearance of the Virgin Mary refers to the lack of humanity in those countries.

The donation was made to SOAS Library in June 2018 by Elsbeth Court, an academic who teaches African Art on the IFCELS course at SOAS, with the support and agreement of the artist Hassan Musa.
