Scope and Content

Mail Art. In this parody of orientalist painting, a desert scene satirizes petrol sheikhs/sultans and their harem of two Mariannes (a symbol for the French nation), using stamps for her heads. In a similar Mail Art drawing to a Sudanese friend, the title is ’petroparadisio’.

The donation was made to SOAS Library in June 2018 by Elsbeth Court, an academic who teaches African Art on the IFCELS course at SOAS, with the support and agreement of the artist Hassan Musa.
