Scope and Content

Contains Roger Berthoud's notes and source material for the ninth chapter which covered Graham Sutherland's controversial 1954 portrait of Winston Churchill. There is a letter from Mary Soames to Berthoud which offers corrections and suggestions to the writer's chapter on the portrait, photocopied correspondence between Sutherland and Mary Soames in which the it is confirmed that the portrait was destroyed, photocopied letters from Churchill to Sutherland and letters from Baroness Lee and Kenneth Clark to Berthoud. There are also a transcripts from interviews with Wendy Reves, Mary Soames, Dame Adelaide Doughty, Elspeth Juda, Kathleen Sutherland and William Coldstream, a copy of the contract for Sutherland to paint the portraitand a large amount of press cuttings.
