Printed & published edition of 'A Gilbertese-English Dictionary', by Hiram Bingham, Missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (Boston, 1908), with handwritten additions and annotations in Gilbertese and English. Author of the handwritten notes not confirmed, but possibly Rev George Herbert Eastman. Loose enclosures include additional notes and translations, including correspondence, dated 5 & 6 March 1959, between Rev Eastman and Mr Fox-Strangways [former Resident Commissioner in the Gilbert & Ellice Islands Colony during the Japanese occupation and explsion] relating to Gilbertese fishing terms.

Administrative / Biographical History
George Herbert Eastman was a missionary with the London Missionary Society, appointed to Rarotonga, and stationed in the Gilbert Islands from 1918. He published a number of books in Gilbertese.
