Scope and Content

Newspaper cuttings, 1930, 1933 & 1934, relating to Tshekedi Khama, Chief of the Bamangwato Tribe, Bechuanaland. The majority of the cuttings, dating from 1933, relate to the suspension of Tshekedi from the acting Chieftainship and his banishment from the tribal territory by Vice Admiral Evans, Acting High Commissioner in the Union of South Africa, following the flogging of a white man on the order of the Chief's court. The publicity surrounding the case includes analysis of the significance of this event for colonial rule in Africa. Included are pieces submitted by Rev A. M. Chirgwin, General Secretary of the London Missionary Society, and articles from the LMS Chronicle.
