Administrative / Biographical History

John Philip (1775-1851) was a missionary with the London Missionary Society in South Africa from 1818, and Superintendent of the Society's South Africa Missions. For a full biographical history see Sibree's 'London Missionary Society Register of Missionaries, 1796-1923'.

Custodial History

The originals of these letters are in the possession of William Enowy Philip's great grandson, Peter Philip, a civil servant in the South African government. Copy was given to Miss Joan H. Davies, Archivist in London, seconded from Praetoria, who gave a set of the copies she had made to the London Missionary Society in October 1964.
