Scope and Content

To his mother, visited Southern Command; was not able to see Auchinleck, but did meet General Harold Franklyn [commander of VIII Corps responsible for the defence of the West Country], also visited a battalion near Bath in very bad weather and had dinner with the Macloeds [family friends]. Has been fitted for a new uniform. Comments that he finds General Bernard Montgomery is very like "Thring" [a mutual acquaintance] in manner and appearance.
