Windham roll, property of Christopher R. Gurney of Northrepps Hall, near Cromer, Norfolk, made for Sir Charles Windham of Stokesly by John Martin, in 1673. Almost a duplicate of the Wentworth roll made for Sir John Wentworth by the same John Martin in 1649. Five vellum membranes stuck together and end to end, a total of 135 heads, 114 with marks, Broadland area. Referred to in Stevenson, Birds of Norfolk, 1890, vol III, p. 110.
Penshurst roll, at Penshurst Place, near Tonbridge, Kent, property of Lord de L’Isle and Dudley, in 1934 in care of Historical Manuscripts Commission (1872, p. 232), briefly described in Report vol I of de L’Isle and Dudley MSS, 1925, p. 232. Vellum roll originally of 3 or more, now 2 membranes. The back used to record a second roll of different marks. Broadland area, probably 1538-40, front, with back later, after 1558.
Heydon Hall roll, in 1944 at Heydon Hall, Norfolk, property of Mrs H.E. Bulwer of Heydon Grange. Four vellum membranes stuck together, mostly Broadland, between 1598 and 1602.
Westmoreland roll, once property of Earls of Westmoreland, sold 17 April 1943 by Francis Edwards Ltd, 83 Marylebone High Street, cat 667, purchased by N.F. Ticehurst. Vellum folded to make a book of 10 f., no covers. Made between 1617 and 1624 [TIC/015].
MS Phillipps 2795, formerly in collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps of Middle Hill, sold by Quaritch Ltd, August 1939 to N.F. Ticehurst. Resembles BL Egerton 2413, a total of 704 marks, made c. 1630 [TIC/016].
Everard roll, compiled 1566 by Henry Everard of Walpole, Marshland, west Norfolk, later in collection of Horace Walpole (1717-1797) 4th Earl of Orford; bought at Strawberry Hill sale April 1842 by Dawson Turner. Then lot 468 in Dawson Turner’’s library sale and bought by William, 4th Earl of Orford (2nd creation). Lent in 1897 to Lady Boileau for copying. The present location of the original unknown to Ticehurst. Described in Notes & Queries, ser III, X, p. 316 after the Dawson Turner sale. Lady Boileau’s transcript purchased c. 1947 at Ketteringham Hall sale by Mrs Barton, and lent by her son T. Barton in 1951 to Norfolk Record Society. Ticehurst’s description is from this copy. He notes the original features are showing the lower mandible and drawing a leg beside the bill.
Laws and Orders of the Court of Swan-mote held at Wisbech Octr 6th 1587, Ticehurst transcribes a copy made in 1879 by Lady L.H. Boileau of a document belonging to the Earl of Orford. The wording differs somewhat from wording in Bodleian Library and Christ’s College copies and lack the Charge to the Jury and headings to different clauses.
