Rate book for the parish of Bangor (city and county districts)

Scope and Content

An exhaustive list of rate-paying inhabitants, illustrating the extensive property of the Hon. E.G.D. Pennant, a certain Roderick Griffith, the executors of Charles James etc.; also the great Vaynol interest to the west of the city.

This list of 159 pages throws not a little new light on the doughty old Radical Dr Owen Owen Roberts, who lived but one door away from the Castle Hotel (p.21) - he owned Glynceris, held Hende Wen under the Marquess of Anglesey at a rent of 315, owned a house in Hirael and land at Penrhosgarnedd.

The Wesleyan Methodists are down for rates for premises in Union Street - had not this meeting-place of the Wesle Bach been transferred to the Independents since 1844?
