Seven Stories, the Centre for Children's Books
Seven Stories, the Centre for Children’s Books, is located in Newcastle upon Tyne and is the first museum in the UK wholly dedicated to the art of British children’s books. Seven Stories is the only place in the country which is actively collecting original archive material by British writers and illustrators for children, from the 1930s to the present day. The collection documents the creative processes behind children’s books, and contains original work by over 70 children’s authors and illustrators. The collection is open to all researchers and interested members of the public, by appointment, and Seven Stories also hosts a programme of exhibitions, arts and education events and activities.
Seven Stories currently holds 77 fully catalogued collections relating to British children’s literature. All of these collections are open to research access and the catalogues for all of these collections will be made available on the Archives Hub. As new collections are acquired and catalogued, it is intended that these catalogues will also be made available on the Hub. The size of these collections varies considerably - some contain only single pieces of artwork or document the writing or illustrating of only one children’s book, while others comprise a complete record of an author or illustrator’s working life. Seven Stories also holds a large collection of published books for children. Catalogues for these book collections will not be made available on the Hub, but further information can be provided by Seven Stories on request.
