Ellen Phethean was appointed writer-in-residence for Seven Stories, the Centre for Children's Books in 2002. She was commissioned to work with the local communities of Byker, in the East End of Newcastle upon Tyne, to raise the profile of the centre and to make a book of people's stories. Ellen Phethean worked for Seven Stories in 2002-3 as a writer-in-residence, leading creative writing workshops and engaging with various groups in Byker, and 'Wall' is a fictional story based on the experiences of some of the people she met during the course of her residency. 'Wall' was published in 2007 by Smoke Stack Books.
