Scope and Content

Letters to HLP from Dr Arthur Collier, her tutor in philosophy, rhetoric and Latin, and also her confidant. Collier exercised a formative influence on HLP's intellectual development, and his circle of friends encouraged her literary endeavours.

Many letters are in Latin, some are concerned only with tuition in Latin, others deal with family affairs, especially those of HLP's uncle, Sir Thomas Salusbury. Numerous notes are initialled or unsigned; many have been endorsed by Dr Samuel Johnson, usually Dr C. to Miss S.

See also the Latin exercises and notes written by Dr Collier for HLP (English MS 630 ).
