Letters from Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who became known as the Ladies of Llangollen when they embarked together on a life of Rousseauesque retirement in a cottage in the Vale of Llangollen. The Ladies of Llangollen became icons of the literary movement of the time.
Letters from Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby are usually signed E.B. and S.P.or S.P. and Eleanor Butler; number 8 is from Eleanor Butler, and number 22 is incomplete; number 17 is apparently a note to the Rev. Leonard Chappelow (see above, Eng MSS 559-563 ).
