Scope and Content

Papers, notebooks and correspondence relating to Madeau Stewart's research into Mary Garden for various broadcasts and magazine articles. This sub-group includes notes taken by Madeau Stewart during an interview with Mary Garden shortly before her death. Mary Garden was an Opera Singer who was discovered in Paris by Albert Carre of the Opera-Comique in 1900. She was a close friend of Claude Debussy, whose character Melisande was first performed by Mary Garden. Mary Garden died in January 1967. The interview of Mary Garden by Madeau Stewart is held in the BBC Sound Archives.

A large collection of material regarding Mary Garden is housed at the Prints and Drawings Archives of the Royal College of Music.

A closure restriction has been placed on certain unpublished groups of this material during Miss Stewart's lifetime in accordance with her wishes, to prevent misuse of the unpublished material she has collected on Mary Garden, particularly that supplied by Helen Garden. The material will remain closed until 2024 or Miss Stewart's death.
