The Nuclear Reactor Committee was appointed by Council in March 1964 to supervise the operation of the University's new nuclear reactor at Risley, Lancashire (now Cheshire). The Committee was charged with ensuring that reactor management complied with the terms of the Nuclear Installations (Licensing and Insurance) Act, 1959; it submitted reports to the Ministry of Power and filed its radiation exposure records with the Committee on Radiological Protection (a public body). The Committee initially had several sub- or associated committees including the Nuclear Safety Committee (a committee of Senate), whose minutes are included.
