The JCUD was established in 1970, replacing the Committee on University Development. The purpose of the Committee was intended to improve coordination of the academic and financial requirements of the University. The Committee was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and included the Faculty Deans and senior members of Council. One of the key roles of the JCUD was to authorise academic posts, based on reports from the Faculty Development Sub Committees which reported to the Committee. The JCUD was one of the most important University Committees, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s when the University faced considerable restrictions on its expenditures in these areas.
