Scope and Content

Ewelme Grammar School was founded by Alice de la Pole, granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer in 1437, though it did not become a National School until sometime in the 1830s. The School became a Primary School in 1944 and gained aided status in 1954. The medieval school buildings are still used by the Primary School and are the oldest maintained school buildings in the country. Please see S99/1 for other records of this school.
