Scope and Content

The Commander-in-Chief (General Putnik) of the Serbians, although feeble in body and advanced in years, was possessed of a great and alert mind. Despite the fact that he had to be carried in a sedan chair, he directed the retreat with such consummate skill and generalship that he brought the army safely through its awful trials more than 200,000 strong.
