The scene of the great Allied offensive was in country intersected by streams, rivers and numerous canals. The crossing was effected by throwing the pontoons here shown across them. For minor operations these consisted of plank sections borne by light metal drums, but across the Marne pontoons 36 ft. wide were employed.
