Scope and Content

From E T Goodwin, National Physical Laboratory, asks if Turing could give a paper at their Symposium on Automatic Digital Computation, preferably on "Pure Mathematical Applications"; in his reply of 21 January, Turing agrees but would prefer speak on "Applications to Mathematical Analysis", which deal with "definite inequalities" . Also asks Goodwin if he could locate a cathode ray tube, mounted in a box, which he left at the NPL. In further reply of 22 January, Turing reconsiders and thinks Goodwin was looking for a talk on something like "Problems of pure mathematics which ought to be tackled with a digital computer". Turing feels that this is not something he wishes to do, partly because he hasn't come across many of these problems: "I should really be quite glad not to lecture at this conference" [in the event, Turing did not give a paper].
