The British Naval North Polar Expedition, 1827 (led by Parry) attempted to reach the North Pole via Svalbard. The sledges were designed to be pulled by reindeer but in the end manhauling prevailed. HMS Hecla was left at Sorgfjorden and Parry and James Clark Ross set out with the sledge-boats Enterprise and Endeavour in June. They reached a furthest north of 82° 45 minutes North in July, establishing a new northern record latitude that was to stand for nearly fifty years
