Administrative / Biographical History

The British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1824-1825 (led by Parry) sailed from London in May 1824. Henry Parkyns Hoopner commanded HMS Fury with Parry on board HMS Hecla. Once again John Franklin was leading an overland expedition at the same time (British Naval Exploring Expedition, 1825-1827). After wintering at Port Bowen, Baffin Island HMS Fury was driven aground on Somerset Island and the crew were transferred to HMS Hecla for the voyage home.
